Questions on pulses have been raised at NGN forums in Beacon and Mingenew and via the WA Pulse Group following a self-funded study tour to India in early 2025. Growers wanted to understand basic information on which pulse to grow from three pulse species (Field Pea, Chickpea and Lentis), as well as basic rules of thumb, including examining optimum seeding rate for Western Region environment. The key constraint identified was the lack of basic comparisons, and region-specific guidelines for seeding rates, which can significantly cost of production and yield. The study tour highlighted the potential for pulses in WA, prompting a re-evaluation of current practices in the Western Region.
This project aims to implement a new NGN investment to establish additional pulse demonstration sites to cover an identified gap and emerging interest in a particular geographical area in WA, through the central region. These sites will be complementary to the existing pulse demonstration sites around WA. Throughout the project, Living Farm will partner with local agronomists, farmers, and consultants to make the sites available for field walks at the two trial sites in Moora and Piawaning.
